Acetylene Cap lamp in brass with rubber base and sliver metal reflector, in original cardboard box. Cylindrical grooved base with circular lamp area on front. Inscription on base: PREMIER LAMP AND ENG. CO. LTD. LEEDS ENG.. Top inscribed: "Premier" BRITISH MADE. Also, "OFF" inscribed for lever positioning. Unscrews to access fuel chamber. Brass colour with black rubber base. Orange and white box has full instructions and safety information printed on. Also "The Premier Lamp & Engineering Co. Ltd. PLECO WORKS BARRAS, GARTH ROAD, LEEDS 12. ENGLAND" on base of box

Though pretty much in the domain of miners, acetylene lamps were much used by potholers and cavers until dry batteries took over in the 1960’s.
Early mountaineers would cycle to and from the hills using acetylene and carbide lamps to light the way and we have a nice bicycle lamp elsewhere in the collection.
We’re not sure if acetylene or carbide lamps were actually used on the mountains though we suspect not, as they were quite cumbersome and presumably didn’t like the wind, though the early candle lanterns seemed to work ok.
Not 100% sure, but think this particular lamp was donated by our old pal,Bill McHugh.
