"JLP" written in ink on canvas strap at back. On back reads " MADE BY WM EWART & SONS. 1944"
Green
Wm Ewart & sons.
We are not 100% sure, but it looks very much like the Wm Ewart & Son who made this rucksack were the Belfast based Linen Company that began life in 1814. The companies archive is down in the National Archive, Kew, Richmond under the ref GB/NNAF/C103381, if anyone is 'anoraky' enough to go and have a look! Thousands of companies got contracts to make items during the war years, and these items subsequently became surplus when war was over, ultimately finding their way onto the back of a mountaineer in this case. Quite how this one got into the collection we are not sure - it is one of many acquired by Mick Tighe in the early years. The initials JLP inked onto one of the straps is no doubt due to a previous owner.
