Stubai
Austria
Way back in 1897 a group of blacksmiths from the town of Fulpmes, in the Stubai region of Austria, got together and formed a wee co-operative for the manufacture of agricultural implements and wood working tools. It was not long before they saw a market in the mountaineering world; an axe for climbing being pretty much the same as an axe for chopping trees.
The Stubai company - as it became known - has continued producing innovative items of mountaineering equipment ever since, and is still in business 120 years later. Many of Stubai's innovations have come from Mountain Guides and leading Alpinists, a classic example being the Stubai Aschenbrenner ice axe which was created by Mountain Guide, Peter Aschenbrenner, produced and marketed by Stubai and used world wide in the 1940/50/60's.
Sebastian (Wastl) Mariner was a leading Austrian Alpinist in the years between the two World Wars and the 'father' of Alpine Rescue. Among many other things he invented the Marwa Karabiner which Stubai manufactured and sold. They were very popular in the 1950's and 60's being very strong and with interesting design features ahead if their time.
The two screwgates versions we have here in the collection were kindly donated by mountain guide, Dave Siviter.
