This pair of short johns were discovered in a cushion - being used as stuffing- in the Ladies Scottish Climbing Club hut at Blackrock in Glencoe.
Their provenance prior to that can only be wondered at, though the markings inside - pictured opposite - tell a little story of their own
Wolf Brand was one of the many clothing companies operating during World War Two and the CC 41 logo alongside it tells us that these short johns were manufactured to government standards which were in operation during the war.
Generally known as utility clothng, it had to be made economically with currently available raw materials at affordable cost which could be covered by the coupons in use at the time. Furniture was also regulated this way.
This nicely dates our short johns to the 1940’s and leaves us wondering how they ended up in a cushion!
