Any piton with a 'ring' like this one is normally quite old as pitons have been around since before karabiners were invented, to clip the rope to the piton, the idea being that you simply threaded the rope through the ring.
Made by Charlet Moser of Chamonix, this one isn't very old and probably dates from the late 1950's or early 1960's - it's one of the many items under the 'origin uncertain' category, and is one that Mick Tighe collected somewhere along the way.
