Using the first four letters of his surname,Dave Allport designed the ALLp(first L is a leg of A) in the early 1980's while working for Troll equipment. Whilst technically a descendeur, it was designed/used more on the technical rope rescue side of things and to this end Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team experimented with ALLps for stretcher lowering on Ben Nevis in the early 80's. Comments on the ALLps after the exercise ranged from 'scary' to 'lethal' and they were duly consigned to the cupboard from where they were retrieved some years later and placed in our collection.
In 2006 Dave Allport suggests to American collector Gary Storrick, who had acquired an ALLp similar to ours;
"with regard to using the one you have got I would just save it as a memento of the first ALLp's on the market"
Subsequent versions of the ALLp were much improved relegating these versions to collector's items as Dave suggests.
For anyone interested in these kind of items, Dr Gary Storrick has a fascinating (or geeky depending on your outlook) website which can be found at storrick.cnc.net
