Belonged to Tom Patey, one of the great characters of the Scottish climbing scene who was killed in an abseiling accident whilst descending from a sea stack called The Maiden, in Loch Eriboll, Sutherland on May 25th 1970. He had this piton hammer with him when he died. Paul Nunn was one of several other climbers there on that fateful day and somehow inherited the piton hammer. In April 1994, Paul and Mick Tighe were re-creating the climb of another sea-stack called The Old Man of Stoer, which had first been climbed by Patey, for a TV series called 'The Edge'. It was Mick's birthday and Paul gave the piton hammer to Mick as a present. The hammer had actually been given to Tom by Brian Robertson who had also been on the first ascent of Stoer. Good reading in Tom Patey's book 'One Man's Mountains' and Paul's 'At The Sharp End'. 'The Edge' is also available on DVD.
Given to Mick Tighe by Paul Nunn
