The Karrimor Joe Brown Extendable Rucksack hit the market in the late 1960’s and was a bit of a trendsetter for a while after that. It was a bit of a ‘boorach’ as the Scots would say, with lots of straps, detachable pockets that wobbled around and the sleeping mat thingy that was designed to keep the sack away from your back and stop sweating but really only gave you sore buttocks.
We all had one back in the old days though and struggled on thinking we were ‘in fashion’. One of them would have cost you around £10 in 1970 and the one we have here is the canvas version which leaked as much as the nylon versions.
