The Great Outdoors Challenge, originally The Ultimate Challenge, is an event which has taken place for many years (roughly 1980 > 2010) and basically involves walking across Scotland from West to East, by any chosen route. It's not a race, though there are competitors, and prizes are awarded to the most unusual, innovative or novel way of doing the 'crossing'. The competition usually takes place in the spring.
Ex Olympic athlete, Chris Brasher, organised the London Marathon for many years, created his own range of walking boots and was an enthusiastic Great Outdoors Challenge participant. These mugs were given as prizes to folk who completed the challenge.
