Gaylord. K. Campbell filed for a patent on his "Passive nut - Campbell Mountaineering Wedgefast and Saddlewedge" in 1974 and by 1977 he seems to have received patent number 3957237, though the drawings and text that go with the product don't seem to bear a great deal of resemblance to the actual item. They were certainly up and running by 1980 as we can see from the advert opposite. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have run very far since for some reason or other the "Campbell passive nut" was not a universal success. Produced by Campbell Mountaineering in America - some yanks loved them - many didn't.
UK based Troll imported and distributed the Campbell nuts, but MOAC and Clog were producing similar wedgy shaped things back then and most Brits used their nuts.
Not sure where these ones came from - some of the many items our founder,Mick Tighe, collected along the way.
