This Salewa Ice pin is one of the many variations on the Snarg, a drive in, screw out ice screw/piton invented by American climber, Greg Lowe, back in the 1970's. This concept was popular for a decade or so until better ice screw technology made them redundant. The only drive in ice piton that has remained popular over the decades is the Warthog, though this is more a 'Scottish' thing as they are good for hammering into turf, rocks, mud and heather when there is little or no ice left! Snargs, ice pitons and the like are not so handy in such situations. This ice piton was part of Mick Tighe's 'rack' back in the 1980's.
