These two little cloth badges, the metal badge and pennant are very rare indeed. The legendary Creagh Dhu Mountaineering Club was spawned in the working class areas of Glasgow during the 1930's and many are the tales of their epic mountaineering feats at home and abroad. Much of their story and in particular, the life story of one member, John Cunningham, has been told in the book, Creagh Dhu Climber by Jeff Connar. What is less well known is that the Creagh Dhu had a Dundee section, to which one of the cloth badges relates and even less well known is that there were women members, one of whom, Elsie Jamieson, seems to have made the cloth badges.
We are indebted to author and historian, Iain (IDS) Thomson, for passing on these unique items and there follows a copy of an e-mail he sent to SMHC chairman, Mick Tighe, which explains a little further:-
Dear Mick
I've found the information about Elsie Jamieson who gave me the Creagh Dhu memorabilia.
She was one of only four female members of the Club. The others were Tess Brown, Mary Miller and May MacFarlane, and all four were married to Club members. Elsie was secretary of the Club for a time in the 1930s. I'm almost certain that the four items will date from that time.
I hope this is of some interest.
Best wishes
