Nestled below the mighty Ben Nevis and at the gateway to the North West Highlands, Fort William is the ideal location for an outdoor shop. It seems that the local ironmongers, Marshall & Pearson, would get a consignment of ex War Department gear back in the 1950's which was eagerly awaited by the mountaineering fraternity.
Local man, Ian Sutherland and his pal, Ian Sykes, opened the first real outdoor shop in the town around 1970. They called it Nevisport and the company blossomed over the following decades until it was sold to a firm called Trespass in 2008.
One of Nevisport's managers, Dave Wrigglesworth, split from the company in the mid 1980's and set up his own business at the other end of Fort William High Street. Calling it West Coast Outdoor Leisure, it too blossomed as a fairly bespoke establishment with the personal touch.
Sadly, just when things seemed to be ticking over just fine, the place went on fire and West Coast, along with several other adjoining businesses, ceased to exist.
Despite a dream that the business would arise, pheonix like from the ashes, it didn't happen and all we have left here in the collection is this wee banner that was given to us by Mandy Bradbury who worked at West Coast for awhile.
