Berghaus
Great Britain
Mountaineers Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison from the North East of England set up Berghaus - literally 'mountain centre' - in 1966, operating from their specialist shop, the LD Mountain Centre, in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Famous for their rucksacks and Yeti gaiters amongst other things, they were quick to capitalise on the new breathable fabric, Gore-Tex, when it appeared on the market in 1977, bringing out a range of breathable clothing of which these salopettes were part.
Dating from the 1980's these salopettes were hard wearing and durable but not very waterproof. They were bought by Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and issued to team members, one of which was founder of The Scottish Mountain Heritage Collection, Mick Tighe. Mick used them on lots of rescues and for his day to day work as a mountain guide. They were subsequently replaced by a less leaky version!
