Modern downhill ski boots are not really our thing, but having been given this pair in mint condition we decided to keep them. These boots first appeared on the market in 2002 , aimed at the advanced female downhill skier and, interestingly perhaps, one of the reasons we decided to keep them is that only eleven years later (2013) we can't even give them away to a skier since technology has moved on so fast, rendering these boots almost obsolete.
Curiously, the boots were kindly donated by Rohan Almond, curator of The Royal College of Surgeons Museum in Edinburgh - apparently they were given the boots for some kind of display and we can rather cheekily speculate that there was a connection with these boots and the amount of work they provided for surgeons since this type of boot was notorious for what is known as 'boot top fractures' - the foot being so firmly clamped into the boot, a fall often resulted in a leg fracture at the top of the boot. For fear of libel we had better point out that Atomic were no better or worse than other manufacturers and that the safety release binding that holds the boot to the ski is a crucial element in the system. Boot top fractures are 'almost' a thing of the past. Anyway, an unusual and interesting addition to the collection.
