Provenance

This is a little gem that dates from the 1950's - long before we had computers and digital technology. Probably aimed more at the motoring than the mountaineering market, though it does claim to work on any scale map which might get the mathematicians thinking.
The manufacturer, Velos, seems to have been around since at least the 1930's and it looks like they were producing all kinds of things made from 'bakelite' which this map measurer is made from.
Invented/created by Belgian born chemist, Leo Baekland in 1907, bakelite is probably best described as an early form of plastic and just about everything was made from it in the 1950's.
Mick Tighe bought this Clicker for £4.00 on the internet in 2013.
