Provenance

This rope, and more importantly the advert that goes with it, came from an era before political correctness had arrived in the world of climbing magazines. The advert opposite comes from the back cover of a 1977 Crags Magazine, an iconic, informative and somewhat controversial take on the British climbing scene at the time. Edited by the equally controversial, Geoff Birtles, the magazine served up interesting, informative and up to the minute articles on the climbing world, well complemented with bums and bosoms provided by the magazine and its advertisers.
Interestingly, the rope itself does not have a brand name such as Edelrid, Mammut, Beal etc. which makes us wonder which truck it fell off the back of! It might not have been a bad deal at £31 however as our Mountain Guide friend, Dave (Smiler) Cuthbertson, bought one way back then and used it forever! He kindly donated it to us when he retired, denying that he ever had anything to do with the lady in the advert - regrettably!
