"Blacks nylon cagoule - the black part is original and has birch bark knobs made for me by 2 Lapp girls in Northern Finland. I used this for over 50 years"
The note above was pinned to this cagoule when we received it in 2015 which dates it back to the 1960's. The owner was Margaret Berwick, or possibly her husband since the Berwicks kindly donated a whole pile of gear in November 2015 and we are not sure who owned what. The Berwicks were well into their 80's by this time so their equipment is a wonderful snapshot of the early days outdoors.
Not much left of the original black part as a PU nylon bottom section has been grafted on at some point which also tells of a 'make do and mend' mentality rather than a 'throw in the skip and get a new one' attitude. Financial constraints would also be a major consideration.
The makers, Blacks of Greenock, were one of the main suppliers of outdoor gear back in the 1960's and while still around in 2016 they are a much less potent force, being owned by a company called Sports Direct.
