Provenance

We are not sure exactly when, but Chalwyn Lamps Ltd. began life sometime in the early 1900's with the primary object of manufacturing Hurricane Lanterns which they sold in the UK and in many third world countries in Africa, in the Middle East and in Ceylon(Sri Lanka). This was reflected in the brand names of the lanterns which in the 1950's comprised of The Tropic, The Far East ,The Tempest and The Pilot. They also produced a range of road traffic lanterns which would adorn the fringes of any roadworks in the UK during the 1960's and 70's.
Quite where the Chalwyn Paraffin Pressure stove fits into the scenario we are not quite sure, though there are a few clues. Chalwyn Lamps Ltd. became Chalwyn Ltd. on July 1st 1958, allowing them to diversify since the hurricane lamp market was dwindling, so we are assuming that the stove we have here in the collection post dates that change and was part of the diversification.
Interestingly, the burner head is made in Sweden, suggesting it's Primus or Optimus, and the flame spreader is made by SH&S(Samuel Heath & Son) in 1945!
We know there were plenty of spare brass tanks around in the 1950/60's and Chalwyn could have bought a pile of 'blanks' and stamped their name on them. Another possibility is that the seller(we bought this stove on e-bay) has cobbled together the parts to make a set.
Anyway, it seems that Chalwyn produced/assembled these stoves, probably in the 1960/70's and we do know that they were marketed and sold by Blacks of Greenock who were Scotland's leading outdoor retailer at the time.
