Like a lot of Stubai gear, this hammer is strong and durable with some novel features such as the sheath like telescopic shaft which can be extended if required. However, Stubai gear always seems to fall a little short of the mark - here's what Mountain Magazine had to say about it in December 1988:
"Well I have always found Stubai a little eccentric in its designs and the FKW does not change my opinion. The head design is a clever idea which works well, but other parts of the tool are a nonsense"
Not sure if the reviewer was talking about the same version as the one we have here, but he obviously wasn't happy.
The FKW was one of the many modular systems around in the late 80's whereby you could change picks, hammers etc. at will, dependent on what you were going to climb. Quite how successful these ones were, we are not sure, though they were probably more popular in the Alps than here in the UK.
This particular one once belonged to George Birley who, amongst other things, was a member if the Wayfarers and Climbers Club.
