The Garmin GPS 45 seems to have appeared on the market around 1994 and was 'the' technology of the time, though, as with much of the electronic world it was soon overtaken by better versions produced by Garmin themselves along with other manufacturers. It also seems that the GPS 45 was difficult to upgrade which begins the usual debate as to whether or not Garmin designed it so that an upgrade was not possible in order to sell the next model, or was the software just not up to it.
We should perhaps remind anyone out there who does not know that a Global Positioning System (GPS) is a box of tricks which can give your position on the ground by using satellites. Early versions could only give co-ordinates but later versions actually have a map that shows where you are on the ground.
Ex RAF mountain rescuer, Jos Gosling, kindly donated this one when he hung up his boots.
