Mittens for military use are pretty easy to spot as they usually incorporate a trigger finger as you will see in the picture opposite. The logic being that you don't have to take your mittens off to fire your weapon and get frostbite as a result!
This pair were used by Mick Tighe when he was an Arctic Warfare Instructor in the Royal Marines back in the 1970's. At that time 45 Commando spent the winters in North Norway, training in anticipation of a Russian invasion during the appropriately named ' Cold War'
