Dick Gowers
We’ve a few ice pitons in the collection, but this one is a wee bit different since it looks to be homemade. Just about everything that is not homemade usually has a maker’s name so the lack of one is a good clue.
It came from the collection of Dick Gowers who was climbing way back in the 1930’s - a time when there was little commercially available gear so folk made their own; often in the shipyards where many of the early Scottish climbers worked.
Thanks to Dick’s grandson, Stephen Gibson, for passing on this wee bit of climbing history.
