Provenance

Make and mend is an old naval term for an afternoon off, or more specifically, an afternoon without ship’s duties when sailors could make or mend their uniforms since they were not issued with them in the early days.
Fast forward a century or two and a lady called Ann Wakeling had a little sewing business in Aviemore in the 1970’s which she called Make and Mend, and one of the things she made was this lovely, cosy pair of gaiters for pottering around the Cairngorms in Winter.
A simple design with neoprene nylon outer and a fleece lining. The only problem with these and lots of similar style gaiters was keeping them attached around the bottom of the boot and we can see the residue of the glue that Ann has used to hold them in place.
A lovely little timepiece of the tale whatever. Thanks Ann.
