The liaison between Joe Brown and Karrimor goes back to 1960 when a Karrimor rucksack bearing Joe’s name first appeared on the market. Busy competing with the big rucksack manufacturers of the era,( Berghaus of Norway and the French Millet) Karrimor wanted an innovative name to complement their innovative new rucksack. Joe Brown was the rock climbing superstar of the day and he willingly lent his name to the rucksack which would have cost you £4.7.0 at the time. History doesn’t record how much Joe got paid!
As usual, with all these products, there have been many versions of the same sack; the Joe Brown Extendable probably the best known.
The one we have here in the collection is a later version as it’s made from Karrimor’s ‘ revolutionary KS100 fabric’ which was developed by them specifically for rucksack manufacture in 1979. The top flap can be extended a wee bit and side pockets are/ were optional.
Neville Kale kindly donated this one after carrying it around the Munros for many a year.
