Fabulous little bit of history here with what looks to be, a homemade haul sack. It was donated by Sam Crymble who was an Outward Bound Instructor, Mountain Guide and Instructor at Scotland’s National Outdoor Centre, Glenmore Lodge, for many years.
Haul Sacks/Bags are used for stowing gear on big wall climbs; the idea being that the lead climber climbs without any gear, brings up his/ her second, and they both haul up the gear which is on a separate rope. It’s also fairly common to operate in teams of three - two climbing and one hauling.
We’ve not had a chance to speak with Sam directly about the sack but it’s been beautifully put together with, what looks like, an old Karrimor rucksack back and carrying straps surrounded by some other blue canvas material and lots of hauling/ re-inforcing straps, all with the patina of age and use - excellent stuff.
