Showing the patina of age, we think this Karrimor sack dates from the mid 1960’s, though we don’t have a name for sure,it looks very much like a “New Alaskan” shown as item “A” in the early Ellis Brigham catalogue opposite.
Karrimor began life making cycle bags and panniers in 1946 and diversified into rucksacks in 1958, a time when Bergans of Norway were the market leaders with their world famous “A” frame sacks. Karrimor seem to have continued the “A” frame idea for a while; this sack looking similar to the Bergan and not unlike the Brown Best Cresta, one of the other market leaders of the time.
Karrimor didn’t follow the leaders long though, as they were soon to become market leaders themselves with a revolutionary range of “frameless” rucksacks, many of which you can see in our collection.
