Provenance

“Dear SMHC,
I would like to donate my Robert Lawrie boots, last used by me in the 1970’s, winter climbing in Wales. They are in good but used condition, black with Vibram soles and have the Alpine Equipment Specialist Robert Lawrie Ltd London W1 Made in Italy labels inside. Please let me know if of interest to you.
Kind Regards
John Harrington.”
They were of interest and are now in the collection- thanks John.
Robert Lawrie (1903-1982) was a trained boot and shoe maker who set up a bespoke outdoor retail shop in Seymour Street, London. He provided boots, climbing and mountaineering equipment to various up market clubs and organisations including the Alpine Club and the successful 1953 Everest Expedition. Whilst he was an expert bootmaker himself, this pair of boots seem to have been imported from Italy and given the Robert Lawrie insignia on the tongue. The boot experts will tell you that they have classic Italian style!
Interestingly, Lawrie was also a racing driver and competed in the Le Mans 24 hours on several occasions.
