The Scott Karabiner was developed by a military organisation known as the Ministry of Supply in the late 1950’s. The request had come for a good, strong karabiner for use in RAF Mountain Rescue Teams and the British Mountaineering Council were also asked for advice.
Unfortunately, the karabiner was a wee disaster and somewhat over engineered; the very strong body did not allow easy clipping of pitons and there was little room for ropes internally.
Dave Siviter, a Mountain Guide, bought the excess stock from a Birmingham company, High Duty Alloys, in 1963, when they ceased production. The karabiners were un- assembled at that point so he put them together and sold most of them. The few remaining he gave to us 50 years later - excellent bit of history - thanks Dave.
