Provenance

Anorak is a shortened version of the Greenland word ‘annoraaq’ a traditional pull over the head item of clothing often made from sealskin or animal fur, particularly caribou. Anorak and Parka seem to be pretty similar in origin and design.
The simple design with little stitching and no outside zips was soon adopted by UK clothing manufacturers and by the 1950’s just about everyone in the outdooors was wearing one.
The Scottish outdoor retailer, Graham Tiso began life in Edinburgh early in the 1970’s and fairly soon after opened a contracts department called Adventure Equipment (Wholesale) Ltd. as they were dealing with large organisations such as the army, navy, Outward Bound and local councils etc.
The company used different companies to make the gear and this fabulous anorak was one of the many. The label tells us it is 100% nylon though we are rather sceptical about that since the canvas style looks and feels like cotton.
Excellent addition to the collection, whatever and many thanks to the donor, Jacquie McLarty, who tells us she bought it in a car boot sale in Yorkshire some moons ago.
