Walking stick with removable metal rapier like spike

Amazing is one of the many adjectives that come to mind when considering this fabulous artefact. The donators, Sally and Crawford Lindsay tell us that Crawford’s father, John, found it in the Lairig Ghru in the 1960’s, other than that we know nothing of its history.
It appears to be home made, utilising a piece of cane as a sheath for the rather lethal looking metal spike which is attached to a walking stick handle.
The reason for anyone carrying such a device stretches the imagination....any suggestions welcome.
