The Whillan’s box tent was better described as a hut and indeed it was in the early days. Made out of wood and canvas the first incarnation saw service on an expedition to the Central Tower of Paine in Chile.
Whillans later teamed up with Mike Parsons of Karrimor who put his pack frame technology to good use, creating the version we have here.
Hamish MacInnes created a similar version to his own design and box tents were used on Chris Bonnington’s expeditions to Everest in the 1970’s.
The box tent era was short and geodesic tent design soon replaced them so we are delighted to have this excellent version here in the collection which was kindly donated by Audrey Salkeld.
