Albion
England
Albion is an old name for England, and understandably perhaps, has been used as a brand name for various products in days gone by; cars, lorries, motorbikes, football clubs, agricultural machinery and in this case, a paraffin stove.
There were a multitude of paraffin stove manufactureres in the early 1900’s, all trying to re-create versions of the Primus, the first of its kind, which had been patented in Sweden in the 1890’s.
The Albion Lamp Company seems to have begun life in the 1880’s, later to merge with another Birmingham based company, Rippingilles. Mainly based in the manufacturing heartland of Birmingham, the companies often stamped their stoves with a brand name; Chalwyn, Monitor, Parasene, S.H&S( Samuel Heath & Son) to name a few.
Other companies would buy component parts, assemble them and ‘badge’ them with a company logo.
We are fairly sure that’s what Albion have done here since there is no ‘stamp’ on the tank, the burner seems to be from another company called Townsend & Coxon and curiously the box shows another brand of stove called Parasene.
A fine little piece of Old England if ever there was!
