Doug Godlington was one of the many fascinating characters who danced and skied his way across the Aviemore ski scene in the 1970’s and 80’s. Self taught cartoonist, skier, author and raconteur; many of his ski cartoons still adorn day lodges and ski cafes across Scotland, often signed as ‘DAG’ rather than Douglas Godlington.
Doug scratched a living from his artwork alongside seasonal work as a ski instructor, having been one of the first to qualify as a B.A.S.I. Instructor( British Association of Ski Instructors) when the institution began in the 1960’s.
Always looking for new ideas to promote his artwork, he came up with the idea(along with lots of others) of a tea towel to promote the Winter Olympics, though we are not sure which one.
Not quite the Mona Lisa, nevertheless a lovely little tribute to the Scottish Ski Scene of yesteryear.
We got this one from the first lady of Scottish Skiing, Myrtle Simpson, once she had finished the washing up!
