William Feuerer is a bit of a cult figure in the USA, though most American climbers wouldn’t recognise that name since he was almost universally known as Dolt, a nickname he acquired from his climbing pals in Yosemite in the 1950’s.
Despite the somewhat derisory nickname, Dolt was a highly intelligent aero engineer who, having struggled with some of the crude, embryonic gear of the 1950’s during early ascents of El Capitan, decided to make some of his own, the results being inspired, much sought after and ultimately, legendary.
These two little hexagonals came from his ‘one man’ production line where he seemed to juggle the Dolt business empire with work as an engineer for McDonnell Douglas during the 1960’s.
Sadly, his finally tuned and somewhat eccentric mind confused him into taking his own life in 1971.
Thanks to our good American friend, Art McCarthy, for sparing these two nuts from his own collection of legendary ‘Dolts’
