We know very little about this odd little karabiner though by the style of it we think it dates from the 1950’s or maybe a little earlier.
We’ve found a Bernard Haseney from Germany who seems to have created the karabiner though a little more research is required…. Watch this space!
P.S
Karabinerhaken translates as carbine or rifle hook and is the origin of the modern karabiner/ carabiner both linguistically and physically.
It seems that Bernhard Haseney started making karabinerhaken way back in the 1880’s in Zella-Mehlis, Germany.
The ‘haken’ was basically a hook or clip which was used to attach a sling to a rifle for carrying over the shoulder. It wasn’t until the 1920/30’s that haken for rifles evolved into karabiners for mountaineering as the sport evolved and became more popular.
It seems that the Bernhard Haseney factory moved with the times and started making karabiners for mountaineers in the 1930’s and continued to make various ‘haken’ until their demise in 1994.
