Mischabel
Switzerland
We’re pretty sure this axe was made by the Andenmatten Brothers who were based in Saas Almagel in Central Switzerland, only a mountain pass from the better known village of Zermatt. The Mischabel range of mountains are nearby giving a handy title for the brother’s axes which they started making in 1918. Most of these axes were sold in Switzerland with some being made for the Swiss Army.
In this case, the bespoke bootmaker and alpine equipment retailer, Robert Lawrie, has imported the axe, stamped his name on it and sold it to the discerning mountaineer, probably in the 1960’s.
The discerning mountaineer was Harry Hilton.
