Nice local connection for us here in the Scottish Highlands as this lovely old ski jacket belonged to Archie MacFarlane, one time proprietor of our local village shop in Spean Bridge.
Archie went to Canada to be trained through the “Commonwealth Air Training Scheme” to fly, as were thousands of other people. After getting his wings he would normally have been sent back to the war in Europe. At the last minute he was selected to stay as an instructor which he did till almost the end of the war. He was based for much of this time in Alberta, in a place called Medicine Hat, about 100 miles east of Calgary, so not too far from Banff where he learned to ski. It was in Medicine Hat that he met his future wife. At the same point he bought this interesting ski jacket to which he added the Norquay and Sunshine badges.
We can't find a maker's name in it and it does have a 'homemade' look about it, albeit a 'well made' look. The Scottish Ski Club badge tells of other skiing expeditions when back home in his native land where the whole family could often be seen out on the slopes.
We assume the jacket was bought back in the 1940's and, having stood the test of time, was kindly donated by Archie's son, David, in 2016.
