"MOUNTAIN RESCUE HEROES OF 999 MOUNTAIN RESCUE"
black
The 999 emergency telephone system began on June 30th 1937 in London and seems to have been the result of a tragic fire where five women died because their call to the fire brigade was put in a queue behind routine calls which delayed the brigade's arrival. The scheme was extended to Glasgow then presumably the rest of Scotland in 1938.
Quite why the 70th Anniversary was chosen to be celebrated we are not sure but the great and the good gathered in Glasgow on October 30th 2008 to be awarded with their trophies. The Mountain Rescue award was given to the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland on behalf of its 900 plus members and having never found a permanent home it was given to us for safe keeping in 2016. Another rather unusual piece of mountain heritage.
