Rock climbers used nuts, as in nuts and bolts, back in the early days, to wedge into cracks to make anchors. Rope would be threaded through and a karabiner, clipped in. ‘Nuts’ has become the generic term for all such devices ever since the early days.
Mass production of ‘nuts’ began in the 1960’s and alongside versions using rope,, ‘wires’ came into being; a piece of wire, joined with a swage, was thought to be stronger and often made placement of the nut easier.
Climbers were often engineers too, and frequently made their own nuts, fine examples of which we have here in the collection. Very well made and incorporating some pretty modern design we reckon they date from the late 1990’s or early 2000’s. Unfortunately, we don’t know who made them as they came as part of a ‘swap shop’ deal with another collector.
