Provenance

Another interesting addition to our ever growing collection of Primus stoves and it might be worth reiterating here that ‘Primus’ has become the generic name for just about every paraffin stove ever manufactured, even when not made by Primus - just as we call most vacuum cleaners, hoovers.
We have an array of non Primus paraffin stoves elsewhere in the collection:-
Monitor, Parasene, Svea, Chalwyn, Burmos, Optimus, Radius, Shinabro etc.
Anyway we do have a Primus No5 S-or here in the collection. Manufactured in 1940, the letters S-or indicate that it is a Senior which, rather confusingly, seems to be a lightweight version of the standard No5 with a slightly smaller tank and thinner brass.
Though folks do take stoves like this camping, they were aimed at a domestic market at a time when few people had electricity.
The smaller, packaway stoves with retractable legs didn’t appear much until after the Second World War when the great outdoors was the place to be.
Thanks to our pal, Ronnie MacKenzie, for donating this particular Primus.
