Provenance

“I have a pair of Robert Lawrie boots, purchased from him in the mid 1970’s but probably made in the 50’s or 60’s; size 5, still in the original box. Would you like them, free. I will pay postage! My husband and I are Polar photographers and I wore them until they started to squeak so badly I couldn’t live with it! They have been to the North of Greenland a couple of times.”

This nice little email came from a lady called Cherry Alexander - we accepted the kind offer, of course, and another note arrived along with the boots.

“Sadly the Lawrie label has fallen off the box and there is nothing on the boots but he fitted them on me himself, and when we lived in London it was a favourite place to shop, they sold hand knitted wool socks and told us the story of Ventile in WW2. Lovely people.”

So here they are in the collection, a very fine example of Robert Lawrie’s boot making skills which he seems to have learnt from his father. Robert was the ‘go to’ man in the middle part of the 20th Century if you wanted good, high quality, alpine gear. He made the boots and imported the best of other equipment from around the globe, much of which you can find elsewhere in the collection. Robert Lawrie in our search box will reveal all.
