Provenance

Cap comforter or headover? That is the question and the answer is both. The more modern version is called a buff.
Soldiers, particularly Commandos, are always associated with cap comforters and rather appropriately the one we have here in the collection was part of the Arctic clothing issued to Royal Marine Commandos when they trained in North Norway in the 1970’s. They called them headovers and used them as neckwear since the Marines had an Arctic hat for headgear.
A variety of names, snood for instance and a variety of uses; lightweight, cheap , easy to clean and much warmer than a modern buff. Cheaper too since three or four pounds would get you one off the internet in 2023 and you'd look cool on the catwalk in a cap comforter!
