Provenance

The original 'Acorns' which we have elsewhere in the collection were the brainchild of John Brailsford, who was a blacksmith, craft teacher and innovator of some repute. Rope slings, jammed knots and filed out nuts (as in nuts and bolts) were the only form of protection when rock climbing up to 1961 when acorns first appeared and began a new era of rock protection. The one we see here is one of several replicas that John made in the 1990's and has the smaller nut which can be placed in a crack if the Acorn is slid back down the rope.
