There are plenty of horror stories around in the world of mountaineering which tell of folk who fell in crevasses and couldn’t get back out and then there is the epic story of Toni Kurz who expired while hanging on the end of a rope on the North Face of the Eiger in 1934.
The prussic (prusik) knot was devised by an Austrian, Karl Prusik, in the 1930’s and is simply a short piece of rope wrapped arounf the main rope to create a friction knot which you can see in the diagram opposite.
As time went by mechanical versions of the prussik were invented, one of the earliest being the Jumar.
The arrival of the Industrial Rope Access in the 1980’s saw a vast amount of devices for going up and down ropes appear on the market.
The Pretzl Croll was one of them. It was mainly used as a chest ascender with other devices linked to the foot loops.
This particular one dates from around 2012 and was used, briefly, by Mick Tighe when he trained as an Industrial Rope Acccess ( IRATA)Technician.
